A new love.

If you know me personally, you’re probably thinking, “OMG FINALLY kp.”

Sorry to disappoint, but I’m not referring to a guy. *sobs* Yeah, I know. What a sad young adult life I lead, right? For anyone who’s curious/nosy, I’m not seeing anyone right now. I’m not really putting in much effort or time to change that either. I want to focus on personal goals right now, and you know, when the right guy comes at the right time and place, then I’ll let it happen…

I could give you a post detailing my lack of success in that department, but ah, that is not the point of this post.

Boy have I digressed, lol.

At the beginning of the year, I knew I wanted to drop weight badly. I actually played with the idea of jumping on the CrossFit bandwagon, but I couldn’t justify spending $100+ /month on a membership. Then I remembered my friends from Sacramento that always mentioned that they were part of running groups with Fleet Feet, a store dedicated to walking and running needs. When I was driving around running errands, I discovered that there was a Fleet Feet branch less than a mile away from my apartment. It was perfect timing on my part because they were still accepting sign-ups for their No Boundaries 5K training program. I’ve always been intimidated by the thought of running with other people, but I pushed those thoughts away and signed up for the program anyway.

Let me tell you.. joining No Boundaries was one of the best things I could have done for myself.

What I love most about Fleet Feet is the support you get from everyone. With the program, we were encouraged to train at our own comfort, but at the same time, we were pushed to do better. It was through No Boundaries that I discovered a new love for running.

I didn’t think I would have progressed this fast with the hobby either. At the start of training, I couldn’t even run 2 miles straight without my knees giving up on me. I would have to stop after 0.5-0.75mi to walk a little. 3 miles at an 11-12min pace is so comfortable for me now.

I’ve been checking out training schedules, and I recently registered to run the Long Beach ICB Half Marathon this October. I’ll have to find a 10K to do in July so I can start building up on distance beyond the 5K.

So what is it that I love about running? It was difficult to start at first, and at times it’s painful, but it got easier (or I just got better at it.) It challenges me, yet relaxes me at the same time. The more I keep at it, the better I become at it. I’m always looking to improve with it. I have my easy days with it, and then there are my off days with it. But even so, I can’t see myself doing without it. It makes me feel stronger. It pushes me.

Someday, when I do find a guy, I want our relationship with each other to be like my relationship with running^.

I won’t settle for anything less.
